Life is like the tide

Music: Up the beach by Jane’s Addiction

XCVII
We never know how high we are
Till we are called to rise;
and then, if we are true to plan,
Our statures touch the skies.

The heroism we recite
would be a daily thing
Did not ourselves the cubits warp
for fear to be a king.

Emily Dickinson, Complete Poems, 1924. (Part one: Life)

an amethyst remembrance

 XXXIII

I held a jewel in my fingers
and went to sleep.
The day was warm, and winds were prosy;
I said: “‘T will keep.”

I woke and chid my honest fingers,
the gem was gone;
And now an amethyst remembrance
is all I own.
